Public Sculpture

The College of Arts, Media & Design recognizes the importance of sharing art with the public. Exposure to art can change perspectives, fuel new ideas or perhaps, just make you smile. It is with this sentiment that the CAMD Dean’s Office hosts an annual Outdoor Sculpture Competition, seeking innovative and thought-provoking works from UCO and Oklahoma artists.

A call for submissions is made each spring.  A winner is then chosen from the submissions, and the artist is granted funds to create his/her sculpture, usually based on a theme selected for the year. The final work is then placed on campus for public display.

2004
The winner of the first competition in 2004, David Thummel’s “Breathe”, is located at the southwest corner of Evans Field. This sculpture, co-sponsored by the American Democracy Project, was based on the theme of “Character, Civility, Community,” UCO’s core values.

2006
In fall 2006, the college unveiled the winning sculpture from its second competition by Christopher Domanski, a technical theatre professor at UCO.  His sculputure is inspired by the College of Liberal Arts' motto "Freedom Through Knowledge," and is located in front of the Liberal Arts Building on the east end of campus.
