Department of Art

The UCO Art Department has a strong vision for the future with a focus on the contemporary world. It continues to evolve and expand to meet the rapidly changing needs of our growing global student population. Students are involved in a rigorous investigation of the visual language and its potential to communicate memories, perceptions, emotions and ideas.

Contemporary art demands strong visual and conceptual components as well as a strong sense of cultural awareness which students address through a variety of foundation courses in drawing, design, color theory and art history. The foundations program culminates in the sophomore portfolio class where students gain a greater insight into the theories and techniques necessary for advanced study.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree is offered in Studio Art, Art History, and Art Education. The studio degree may concentrate in advanced courses of study in painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography or jewelry/metalsmithing. In this series of focused coursework, students hone their skills while they are encouraged to find their personal vision through imaginative problem solving, self-reflective evaluation and critical thinking.

The capstone of the program is the senior seminar and exhibition course. This course prepares students for the business of being a contemporary artist, while also designing and realizing their senior exhibition. This exhibition is held each semester in downtown Oklahoma City and serves as a showcase of the diversity of students' interests and visions as well as the talent that is cultivated throughout the program.

At the completion of the program, students will have produced an exhibition-ready body of work and will have achieved the necessary verbal communication skills and historical understanding to defend their visual decisions.

It is the hope fo the program that students will continue to pursue their art education post-graduation whether through graduate study of individual rigor.
